PROGRAM :: TWO YEAR OLD
CURRICULUM
PRESCHOOL CURRICULUM ::
HEBREW IMMERSION

Welcome
to the Broadman-Kaplan Early Childhood Center of Tikvat
Israel.
Our
educational program includes creative expression, languages,
reading readiness, math, science, music and outdoor play.
During indoor and outdoor play, with carefully selected
materials, children establish important foundations for
conceptual learning. Children become increasingly independent
as they learn to dress themselves, set tables for lunch,
serve their own food and drinks and clean up after themselves.
They learn about their environment and the area by taking
field trips.
Each
teaching team designs its own curriculum and schedule, with
guidance from the director. When you visit the classroom
during the orientation day and at back to school night,
you will have the opportunity to become acquainted with
the teachers and ask any questions you might have.

Israel's Early Childhood Center offers your child a
traditional Jewish environment where they can learn
and play. We strive to lead your children to feel, to
understand, to live and to love Judaism. The environment
encourages a strong Jewish identification through the
weekly observances of Shabbat, the celebration of Jewish
holidays, exposure to Jewish values and the introduction
of Hebrew through songs and games. We are proud that
the Partnership for Jewish Life and Learning awarded
the ECC the Early Childhood Jewish Commendation for
our Judaic curriculum. As a result, our children develop
an intense feeling of pride in their Jewish heritage
as they observe and participate in Jewish customs, rituals,
and holiday observances. As early childhood professionals,
our aim is to give each child the opportunity to learn,
develop, and play to the fullest extent possible. |

TODDLER
PROGRAM
The
Broadman-Kaplan ECC offers toddler care starting at 18
months of age. A toddler must first accept and trust a
new adult in their world. The caring attentiveness of
our staff allows your child to be happy away from the
intimate contact of the family. By providing an atmosphere
that is physically safe and emotionally warm your child
will feel secure.
The Broadman-Kaplan ECC provides a changing environment
for our toddlers. Activity centers that include large
and small motor opportunities, language and music activities
as well as sensory, and outdoor play will fill every day.
Your child's learning success is assured by simple activities
that match developmental ability level and provide foundations
for later, more complex skills.
The two year old
program at Broadman-Kaplan ECC may be a child’s
first preschool experience. It is designed to be an atmosphere
that encourages creativity, curiosity, exploration and
respect for individuality. The teachers provide nurturing
supervision and positive guidance. Through consistency,
affection, encouragement and support each child learns
he/she is a unique individual and develops a positive
self concept.
Two year olds have a lot of energy, are curious, and are
growing in independence. Their fine motor skills are improving
and they now explore objects with more deliberate experimentation
and purposeful efforts. Two year old children learn by
experiencing their environment through their senses, by
physically moving around and through social interaction.
They are learning to produce language rapidly and are
developing social skills.
The two's program promotes the emotional, social, physical
and cognitive development of each child in a warm creative
environment. Weekly theme based lesson plans are developed
by each teacher. Materials are introduced into the different
activity centers that relate to the theme being explored,
and there are more structured activities planned. Learning
experiences encompass all aspects of a child's development
and are offered through hands on, age appropriate activities.
Children are encouraged to express their feelings through
appropriate words and actions. Self esteem is fostered
by nurturing each child's unique personality and learning
style.
The three and four
year old classrooms at Broadman-Kaplan ECC are child centered,
teacher facilitated. Through consistency they are able
to freely explore and develop their motor, cognitive,
communication and personal-social skills. Play is essential
to development because it contributes to the cognitive,
physical, social, and emotional well-being of children.
That is why our curriculum is play
based. We believe children learn through hands-on
experiences and having fun.
The preschool child has endless energy, is an active learner
with a natural curiosity. They are social and developing
their independence. These children love to spend their
day being physical and they learn best through action
and activities.
Their large motor skills are fairly well developed at
the beginning of the year, but continue to grow through
dramatic play, music and movement and ample outside time.
It is in these environments that the preschooler can run,
jump, climb, build and socially interact and therefore
expand their gross motor planning.
Fine motor skills such as puzzling, beading, fastening,
writing, and scissor cutting are generally underdeveloped
early in the year. In the preschool classroom the children
develop these skills by manipulating and exploring objects.
Repetition with varied manipulatives helps the three and
four year old define their fine motor planning.
These children are social. They produce language rapidly
and are working on cooperative play. Daily activities
often include complex role playing. They pretend to go
to familiar places and their play is often domestically
oriented. Communication skills and personal social skills
expand through turn taking and question asking and answering.
Circle time, dramatic play, science and social studies
are activities that are utilized to help grow language.
The preschooler's brain is working overtime. Why? is often
a popular question. That is because the three and four
year old now understands the concepts of same and different,
is able to explain and name things, works with intention
and is interested in labeling to organize all this new
information into memory.
One of the most notable changes we begin to see is the
level of independence. The three year old child is capable
of washing their hands, using the restroom, putting on
and taking off their jackets, carrying their belongings
and taking out their lunches. The preschool classrooms
spend time teaching the children how to make appropriate
choices, whether it be gaining and maintaining access
to ongoing play or selecting an activity on which to work.
The teachers act as facilitators giving encouragement
and fostering a sense of pride in making appropriate personal
social choices. We believe that a positive self-concept
is a critical component for success in life.
The Broadman-Kaplan
ECC provides a Hebrew Immersion program for children ages
three and four. They are in a classroom where the teachers
speak mostly Hebrew during the core hours from 9:15 am
to 1:00 pm. The teacher will speak to the children only
in Hebrew and the children will answer in English. As
the year progresses the children begin to use the language
in a way that is comfortable for them.
All of the early
literacy experiences will also be in Hebrew. All of the
letters and words throughout the room are in Hebrew. This
provides the whole educational process with an emphasis
on Hebrew.
Learning a second
language will enable your child to exercise their mind
while providing them with an opportunity to learn more
about another culture. What a great way to open the door
to other world's right here in our own backyards.
Hebrew language is
vital to one's Jewish identity development. Research show
that the acquisition of second language in early childhood
promotes cognitive growth and academic achievement. Schools
across Canada and the United States do second language
acquisition in French, Spanish and Chinese. This approach
is the "cutting edge" of today's educational practices.
Just imagine your child coming home understanding (and
eventually speaking) Hebrew words that have been part
of our Jewish Heritage for over 5,000 years. "Nes Gado
Yeheyeh Poh!" - "A great miracle will happen here ...
will wonders never cease?"
